The 3 Do's and Dont's of Hair Straightening

Even if your hair looks beautiful with a natural wave or bouncy curls, every now and then you may opt for the sleek look of straight hair. While there are many methods that will leave you with straight hair, not all of them are long lasting and many can actually cause permanent damage to your hair. Consider these do’s and don’ts before you attack your curls so you can be sure to get the results you want without losing your hair.
Do’s For Fabulous Straight Hair

1) Do choose a leave in conditioner that will protect your hair as you straighten it and help it to stay straight longer. Look for a product that will nourish
and moisturize your hair without leaving it sticky. Even though gels and hairspray will keep your hair flat, they will also leave it looking stiff.

2) If you have a beautiful mane of long hair, use a paddle brush and a hairdryer with a diffuser to straighten your hair.

Hair stylists will often use round brushes instead, however, when you are trying to straighten your own hair at home quickly, a paddle brush will be much easier and get the job done faster. Adding a diffuser to your dryer will direct the heat directly onto the section of hair that you are straightening for much better results.

3) Instead of blow drying your hair straight while it is wet, dry it completely with a hair dryer before brushing it out. Doing this will make the process much faster. Then, after your hair has dried, you can get out your paddle brush and start to straighten your hair sections at a time.

Straightening Hair Don'ts

1) No matter how much you wish you were born with naturally straight hair, avoid using chemicals in an attempt to get permanently straight hair. Even the chemical hair strengtheners applied by professionals can be very damaging to the hair and do not always have permanent results.

2) Have you heard stories from your mother about how her generation used to iron their hair to make it straight? No one wants to be disrespectful to their parents, however, this is one piece of parental advice that has “NO” written all over it. There is no need to fry, scorch, or torch your hair to get it straight.

3) While hot irons designed for hair are a safer way to go, avoid using them often. The excessive heat applied directly to the hair can dry it out and make it more prone to splitting.
